Cycles Gladiator Merlot 2005 Central Coast, California

List Price: $9

What the Wine Critics Thought: Wine Enthusiast 88 Points What an interesting wine this is. Classic California Merlot, soft and rich, with a burst of cherry, raspberry and mocha flavors and spicy, smoky vanilla from considerable new oak. But the addition of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon give it added depth, texture and nuance. Stock up by the case.

What Mark Thought: If you're looking for a value-priced Merlot that delivers a lot of satisfaction, seek out the Cycles Gladiator Central Coast Merlot 2005. It has plenty of body and flavor and a bit of complexity, due to the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah in the blend. And it was aged in new French oak for 11 months, so there's a pleasing amount of vanilla on the nose and palate. Since it's a youthful wine it benefits from about half an hour in a decanter, and is well worth the wait.
